Introducing the Code of Conduct for Charles River Wheelers

2023-08-21 10:55 AM | Randolph Williams Admin (Administrator)

Dear CRW Members,

We are excited to announce the upcoming implementation of a Code of Conduct for the Charles River Wheelers bike club. Our goal is to create a positive, safe, and enjoyable environment for all members, which is why we have crafted this Code of Conduct.

The Code serves to outline the expectations, behavior, and principles that all members should adhere to during club rides and events. By implementing these guidelines, we wish to foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among our members.

In order to ensure that this document accurately reflects our diverse community's values, we want this process to be collaborative. The board has agreed on a preliminary version in July and now we welcome your invaluable input.

We invite you all to review the draft and provide your comments through August 31st. We will carefully evaluate the feedback gathered during the commentary period and finalize the document accordingly. The final version will be published in September.

To facilitate member engagement, we are sending members an online poll in which you review and comment on on the proposed Code of Conduct.

Your opinions matter and will help us uphold CRW's principles while promoting a supportive biking experience for everyone involved. Let's come together as a community and create a Code of Conduct that reflects our shared values while setting the foundation for continued success.

Thank you in advance for your participation, and we look forward to growing together as a club through this initiative.

With best regards,

The Charles River Wheelers Board

Where is this proposed code of conduct? This article is dated 8/21 and the comments are due a mere 10 days later?

I support the Code of Conduct; it's too bad that we need to implement a code, to set behavior expectations that should be implicit. But there is an evident need in light of the fact that the board had to deal with some evident issues this season. Thanks.

As an occasional ride leader, I have four reactions to the Code of Conduct

    1. Great start

    2. Should be reduced to 3-6 very short bullet points so a ride leader could read them quickly at ride start, along with the safety lecture, and/or pass out a small “Code of Conduct card” to each rider. Constant repetition will help. Details can be available online.

    3. Develop training C0fC module/short fund YouTube films for all leaders and ride participants to view at will. Illustrate possible interventions in film.

    4. Tie CoC into CRW Values. Show connections. Two come to mind:

CRW values the advancement and enjoyment of cycling through:

o pursuit of diverse members and inclusive activities

o education of the cycling community and the general public about the health and fitness benefits of cycling and safe cycling practices
